An auction of Elvis Presley memorabilia got bidders all shook up, with a clump of the late King of Rock and Roll’s hair selling for US$18,300 and one of his shirts selling for US$62,000.
More than 150 items that had belonged to the former president of the Elvis Presley fan club went on the block at Chicago’s Leslie Hindman auctioneers.
The priciest items included a red ultrasuede shirt worn by Elvis, which was sold for US$34,000, and a monogrammed cream-colored shirt that sold for US$62,000, according to the auction house’s listing of post-auction sale prices.
Two concert-worn scarves sold for a combined US$2,318. A set of concert-used handkerchiefs went for US$732.
Presley’s personal collection of single song mini-records, known as 45 rpms, sold for US$3,904.
Wedding and bridal shower photos of Elvis and wife Priscilla sold for nearly US$6,000.
Personal letters from Elvis’s relatives were also among the items auctioned, including a collection of letters from his estranged grandfather J.D. Presley (US$1,159) and from his aunt (US$458).
The auction house did not provide details about the buyers, including the purchaser of a “large quantity of Elvis’s hair,” which went for US$18,300.(AFP)

Photographer Franziska Stuenkel likes to take spontaneous urban shots, so she needs a nimble camera that is ready to go when inspiration strikes: her German-made Leica M11. “I have to be very quick and discreet,” said the Berlin-based artist who captures reflections of people walking past windows, their contours merging with the shapes behind the glass. Dogs’ noses are incredibly keen. They can even detect changes in cortisol levels in human sweat and breath. Known as the “stress hormone,” cortisol increases when humans are under pressure. Recent research indicates that the smell of human stress can influence a dog’s behavior and emotions. In the study, human volunteers were exposed to the stressful tasks of preparing and delivering a speech on the spot and then solving math problems. __1__ Researchers collected sweat and breath samples from the volunteers on pieces of cloth during both their stressful and restful states.
