The strong winds brought by Typhoon Morakot blew down bamboo forests in the mountain areas of Tainan County, and vehicles driving through flooded areas had flats after their tires were pierced.
Bamboo and tire debris and waste materials thrown up by the typhoon are now used by police officers at the Wangming police station in Yujing police precinct to decorate the police station. They have put their heads together to create a police station with an elegant atmosphere.
When Wangming officers inspected the mountain areas after the typhoon passed, they found a lot of bamboo on the roads blocking traffic. They removed it, but in a moment of inspiration, Pan Yung-hsin, chief officer at the station, collected some bamboo sticks to use it as free decorative material. Turning waste into gold, officers used their do-it-yourself talents and split the bamboo lengthwise and used it together with some metal wire to make the surroundings look better by covering plumbing and wires in the station’s toilets and garden.
After the typhoon, several police cars had to drive through water while carrying out their duties. They often had their tires pierced by debris and broke down in the water. After repairs, some officers thought the tires would make flower pots that looked good, would be easy to clean and would allow them to reuse waste. They quickly collected tires from police officers and friends and hung them on the walls of the police station, where they now are an eye-catching part of the landscape.
Pan says the Wangming police station is both small and pretty, with a well in the garden that gives it an old and simple look. The officers offered their ideas, and working together, they used the “extraordinary gifts” brought by Typhoon Morakot to create a new look for the police station. They also asked a local painter to paint the walls, thus turning the police station into an attraction that has been well received both by local residents and cyclists.(TRANSLATED BY PERRY SVENSSON, LIBERTY TIMES)
Computex, Asia’s biggest electronics conference, kicked off Monday in Taipei, and as in years past drew industry chieftains from Nvidia Corp.’s Jensen Huang and Qualcomm Inc.’s Cristiano Amon to Young Liu of Foxconn, which makes the bulk of the world’s iPhones and Nvidia servers. But while last year’s event was a celebration of the post-ChatGPT AI boom, executives this time are likely grappling with the uncertainty of the Trump administration’s effort to reshape the global trade order — disrupting a decades-old model for tech manufacturing. This year’s exhibition will of course feature the hardware required to bring artificial intelligence to life.
