A playful polar bear that once spent nine days trapped in a moat has done it again. Zero, a 19-year-old polar bear, lost his balance and slipped into the moat while pawing at a toy at Milwaukee County Zoo, Wisconsin, US.

Zoo spokeswoman Laura Pedriani says a net caught Zero when he fell so he wasn¡¦t hurt. Zoo workers cut the netting and the 19-year-old polar bear was walking around later in the day.

Pedriani says Zero decided to climb out of the moat when he got hungry.

The polar bear was closer to visitors but his only exit from the moat went into his regular enclosure. A fence still separated visitors from the bear and the moat.

Zero weighs around 700kg and stands about 3.6m tall. His usual diet includes fish, fruit, vegetables and lard balls.

Zero fell into the same moat 15 years ago and stayed there for nine days.

Because they are difficult to monitor, nobody is entirely sure how many polar bears there are, but experts estimate there are about 25,000 in the wild.
