Spanish woman climbs another top peak, three left for record ¦è¯Z¤ú¤kµn¤s®aÃkµn¥@¬É¸s®p

Spanish mountaineer Edurne Pasaban came closer to achieving her goal of becoming the first woman to climb the world¡¦s 14 highest peaks after climbing mount Makalu on the border between Nepal and China, Spanish media reported.

The 35-year-old reached the top of the mountain, the world¡¦s fifth-highest, without the aid of oxygen along with a group of Spanish climbers, the Spanish daily newspapers El Mundo and Marca reported.

She became only the second woman to climb 11 peaks above 8,000m after Austria¡¦s Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner, who is also seeking to become the first female to ascend all 14 ¡§eight-thousanders.¡¨

Pasaban, who began her attempt to make history in 2001, still must climb Annapurna, Kangchenjunga and Shisi Pangma to meet her goal. She has already scaled the world¡¦s two highest mountains, Everest and K2.

An Italian, Reinhold Messner, became the first man to climb all 14 summits in 1986.

The 14 mountains are all located in the Himalayan and Karakoram mountain ranges in Asia.
