Eggs are great. They're really yummy and packed full of nutrition, but they can also help us to understand how what we drink affects our teeth and bones. Don't worry though, there's lots of fun to be had along the way! Remember to wash your hands frequently when handling raw eggs.
What you will need:
Several old jam jars

Vinegar
Cola
Milk
Six eggs
Barbecue tongs
A pan
Some paper, a pen and some Scotch tape (for labeling the jars)
- First ask an adult to help you to hard-boil three of the eggs. The eggs should be cooked in a pan of boiling water for 10 minutes. Allow them to cool by running them under cold water before you handle them.
- Place the hard-boiled eggs in separate jars. Put three raw eggs in separate jars, too. Label each jar as you go along.
- Now add the liquids. Each liquid should cover the egg completely. There should be a raw and a boiled egg covered by each liquid (milk, cola and vinegar).
- Leave the eggs in the jar for three days. Do not put lids on the jars. Make sure that you leave them in a place where they won't get knocked over. Don't leave them in direct sunlight. Make sure that they are out of reach of pets and younger children.
- After three days, remove each egg carefully from its jar using the barbecue tongs. Be gentle. Make sure that you still know which egg is which.
Don't forget to record what happens in your Science Journal.
What's the science?
An egg shell is made up of calcium carbonate. Our teeth and bones also contain a lot of calcium. Milk is a good source of calcium. Coke contains phosphoric acid - the reaction of the egg to the coke mirrors how your teeth react when you drink soda.
The vinegar, which is an acid, dissolves the alkaline calcium carbonate, so the shell dissolves. The bubbles that you can see when you put the egg in vinegar are full of carbon. They rise and escape into the air. After 72 hours, this leaves a rubbery egg. You should be able to bounce the hard-boiled egg off the ground (but the raw one will explode).

What do you know about eggs? What are their shells made of? Where do you find calcium in the human body? Where can you find carbon? What do you know about vinegar? Is it an acid or an alkaline? What about milk? Is cola acidic or alkaline? How do you think the eggs will react to each liquid? Do you think the reaction will be different for raw and hard-boiled eggs?
Rice is an essential ingredient in Taiwanese cuisine. Many foods are made of rice, adding more variety to our cooking, such as rice cake, or “gui.” Wagui is made by steaming rice flour batter in a bowl. The term “gui” refers to a type of food made from rice, while “wa” refers to a bowl. The pronunciation of “gui” in Taiwanese Hokkien is similar to the word for “nobility” in Chinese, so it is common for people to prepare various types of gui, including wagui, as offerings to the gods or ancestors,. nobility (n.) While Taiwan may not be
Drive-through (or drive-thru) restaurants provide people with the immense convenience of being able to purchase and pick up meals without needing to leave their vehicles. These restaurants have been around for decades, and their success has spawned a number of equally handy services. The drive-through concept originated with the drive-in restaurant, the first of which was established in the US in 1921. Patrons would order and eat the food that was delivered to their cars by workers called “carhops.” Ten years later, a drive-through service was introduced, but it was not until 1947 that the first exclusively drive-through restaurant opened its
It’s no secret that Japanese people have a deep affection for noodles. Like in the rest of East Asia, noodles are an important staple food, second only to rice. Japanese people have enjoyed noodles for over 1,000 years. The first noodles came from China and were introduced around 800 CE. As time passed, noodles in Japan not only became widespread but also developed some unique Japanese characteristics. The three most popular types of noodles in Japan are ramen, soba, and udon. Ramen, typically made from wheat flour, is usually thin and firm. The dough is kneaded and left to
On Tuesday last week, the flame for this summer’s Paris Olympics was lit at the birthplace of the ancient Olympic Games in southern Greece in a meticulously choreographed ceremony. It will then be carried through Greece for more than 5,000km before being handed over to French organizers at the Athens venue used for the first modern Olympics in 1896. The pageantry at Olympia has been an essential part of every Olympics for nearly 90 years since the Games in Berlin. It’s meant to provide an ineluctable link between the modern event and the ancient Greek original on which it was initially modelled. Once
