The hit film Cape No. 7 (海角七號) bagged nine Golden Horse Award nominations yesterday, including nominations for outstanding Taiwanese Film of the Year, best cinematography, best feature film, best director, best original film score and best soundtrack. The two lead actors, Chie Tanaka and Lin Tsung-hui (林宗輝), were both nominated for best new performer.
Director Wei Te-sheng (魏德聖) was nominated for outstanding Taiwanese filmmaker of the year, while Ma Ju-long (馬如龍) was in the competition for best supporting actor.
Supermodel Lin Chi-lin (林志玲), who appeared in the war epic Red Cliff (赤壁), was not nominated for best new performer.
Cape No. 7 was trumped by Peter Chan's (陳可辛) The Warlords (投名狀), which secured 12 nominations. In third place was Assembly, a Chinese civil war feature film, which received six nominations, making the competition fierce between filmmakers from Taiwan, China and Hong Kong.
Before the list of nominations was announced, an online poll by NOWnews showed that more than 80 percent of respondents believed Cape No. 7 would walk away with the most awards this year.

Taiwanese indie band Sunset Rollercoaster and South Korean outfit Hyukoh collectively received the most nominations at this year’s Golden Melody Awards, earning a total of seven nods from the jury on Wednesday. Hong Kong singer Eason Chan’s (陳奕迅) concerts in Kaohsiung this weekend have been postponed after he was diagnosed with Covid-19 this morning, the organizer said today. Chan’s “FEAR and DREAMS” concert which was scheduled to be held in the coming three days at the Kaohsiung Arena would be rescheduled to May 29, 30 and 31, while the three shows scheduled over the next weekend, from May 23 to 25, would be held as usual, Universal Music said in a statement. The Taipei District Court sentenced babysitters Liu Tsai-hsuan (劉彩萱) and Liu Jou-lin (劉若琳) to life and 18 years in prison respectively today for causing the death of a one-year-old boy in December 2023.
