Holiday revelers were treated to some outdoor fun yesterday as the cold snap brought snow to Yushan (玉山) and Hohuanshan (合歡山).

Low temperatures are expected to persist, with the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) forecasting that the mercury would drop to 10?C early in the morning and late at night today and tomorrow. Forecasters advised people to dress warmly.

    rainfall

Moderate rainfall is forecast in most areas during the holiday, the bureau said, but mountainous areas in the north and northeastern parts of the country are likely to experience heavy rain today.

As of 11am yesterday, there was an accumulation of 10cm of snow on Hohuanshan in the areas between Wufeng (鳶峰) and Wuling (武嶺), which attracted hordes of visitors.

An accumulation of 5.5cm of snow was also reported on Yushan at 8:30am yesterday.

Lower altitude areas such as the Tsu-en section of the Cross-Island Highway was also covered with light snow, luring people to stop by a nearby open ground for some fun in the snow.

    poor visibility

Nantou police urged motorists to be extra cautious when driving in mountainous areas because of poor visibility. They also suggested drivers equip their vehicles with snow-tread tires if they wish to drive to the mountains to see the snow.
