New virus targets MSN messenger, victims worldwide

A new virus is spreading on MSN messenger, wracking havoc to computers here and around the world, an anti-virus company said.

The virus named WORM_BROPIA.F was first found in South Korea and then rapidly spread to China, Taiwan and the rest of the world, said Jony Wu (吳韶卿), an associate manager at Trend Micro Inc's Taiwan bureau.

More than 3,000 computer users here reported damage from the virus but the number may have exceeded 10,000 computers as of yesterday, Wu said.

Once the virus infects a computer, it resides in the memory and installs a backdoor on the system, allowing unauthorized remote access to the infected computers, which will automatically spread the worm to contacts in MSN Messenger.

Besides WORM_BROPIA.F, files named Bedroom-thongs.pif, Hot.pif, Naked_drunk.pif, New_webcam.pif and Underware.Pif have proven to contain the virus.
