The Visegrad Four Alliance, consisting of the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland and Hungary, will be showcasing their respective cinematic talents to Taiwanese audiences at the Central European Film Festival, which kicks off Thursday with screenings at 20 venues around the country.

All films will have both English and Chinese subtitles and admission is free.

The Czech Republic’s offering, The Icing, is a comedy set in a rural pub and involves a kidnapped bride and a rebellious bridesmaid. The rest are dramas — Hungary’s Mom and Other Loonies in the Family is a family saga spanning about 100 years as they move 27 times due to external circumstances such as the Nazi Invasion and communism.

Poland’s Body is about anorexia and dealing with loss, while Slovakia’s Heaven, Hell … and Earth details the struggles of a successful ballerina.
