Sochaux bounce back to win French Cup in style

AP , SAINT-DENIS, FRANCE

Sochaux twice came back from a goal down to beat Marseille in a penalty shootout and win the French Cup on Saturday for the first time since 1937.

The match finished 2-2 after extra time with all four goals off headers. Djibril Cisse scored twice for Marseille and Moumouni Dagano and Anthony Le Tallec for Sochaux.

Marseille, which also lost last year's final to Paris Saint-Germain, has not won a trophy since 1993. The win guarantees Sochaux a place in next season's UEFA Cup.

Sochaux goalkeeper Teddy Richert saved two kicks during the shootout, the last from Ronald Zubar giving Sochaux the win. Richert also made key saves when Sochaux beat Nantes to win the 2004 League Cup final.

Djibril Cisse gave Marseille the lead in the fifth minute, and Dagano leveled in the 67th. In extra time, Cisse notched again eight minutes in, only for substitute Le Tallec to make it 2-2 in the 105th.

Nigeria defender Taye Taiwo chipped a high ball down the left for Samir Nasri, and the midfielder, recently capped by France, cushioned the ball on his thigh and then flicked it up with the outside of his boot for Cisse to head home.

Sochaux almost leveled in the ninth minute when Sebastien Grax made a clever run across the Marseille defense, cut inside Zubar, lobbed the ball over goalkeeper Cedric Carrasso, and hit the crossbar.

A minute later, Richert dived low to his left to keep out Nasri's shot.

Nasri, tipped as a future successor to Zinedine Zidane, almost scored again in the 36th when he controlled a high ball from Cisse with his chest, flicked it over a defender's head, and shot at Richert.

Richert then made saves on Mamadou Niang and Franck Ribery midway through the second half, moments before Sochaux leveled when Dagano headed in Jerome Leroy's cross.

In the 84th, Nasri dribbled past two defenders and then shot over.

Two minutes after Cisse's goal, Sochaux's Karim Ziani hit the crossbar with a curling free kick.

Cisse lost his marker to head in substitute Toifilou Maoulida's cross from the right, but with five minutes left Ziani's floated pass allowed Le Tallec to head past Carrasso and into the bottom corner.

Ziani, Valter Birsa, Le Tallec, Leroy and Brunel all scored from their spot kicks.
