Strategies for Spooky Saturday

By Ron Brownlow  /  STAFF REPORTER

Both lost to a man and a woman dressed in China Airlines uniforms.

“They hadn't made them themselves, they had just purchased them somewhere. I think that's defeating the purpose,” Goding quipped. “I've been on some scary China airlines flights, but I don't consider China Airlines costumes in any way scary.”

Though it took him nine hours to make Astro Man, Goding doesn't expect to win this year, either. His original idea of appearing strapped to a gurney as Dr. Hannibal Lecter was cancelled after the “orderly” dropped out.

Then again, spending the entire night immobilized and drinking through a straw probably wasn't such a good idea after all.

If you're looking for a formal occasion this weekend that is still spooky, the Canadian Society is holding its annual Maple Leaf Ball at the Formosa Regent Hotel. This year's theme is Dracula's Castle.

“There will be a lot of black tie, black dress attendees,” said co-chair Greg Hartigan. “But I'm sure that there will be some people dressed up as Count Dracula because you can be quite formal in a tuxedo and a cape with a drop of blood or two coming down your cheek.”

Admission is NT$3,500, or NT$32,500 for a table of ten. Proceeds go to the Community Services Center and the Garden of Hope. Call (02) 2757-6997 for tickets.
