The evolution of Betel Nuts

But Huegu's guitar playing has lost some of its unique character. On Betel Nuts it often sounds as if he is simultaneously strumming and picking, playing melody and bass. With Bura Bura Yan the timing is off, and on Hunters the acoustics sound decidedly Western.

“I think of what Huegu and ‘Api were doing with their music in their home village as a kind of classical music,” Roberts said of the songs on Betel Nuts. “It is rich and honest, and the people they grew up with in their village understood it.”

I am sure the original strength of their music … is still in them.”

What: Huegu performs in Pingtung and other members of the Betel Nuts Brothers perform in Taipei

Where: In Pingtung at the Eslite bookstore located inside Sogo (太平洋百貨) at 7F, 72 Chungjeng Rd (屏東市中正路72號7F) and at the Taipei Culture Center (台北市立社會教育館), located at Alley 191 Kangle St, Neihu, Taipei (內湖區康樂街191巷).

When: Both performances begin at 7:30pm
