While the biggest of the beach-side rock festivals, the annual Ho-Hai-Yan, was washed away by the typhoon, dance fans will be celebrating anyway with Cube Productions at Baishawan (
Headlining is Black Eyed Peas' DJ Motiv8 and 2001 DMC turntable cham-pion, Rocky Rock.
Motiv8, or Monroe Walker as his mom knows him was already a presence on the west coast club circuit when he met an aspiring MC named William Adams. The two were later joined by another pair of MCs to become the Black Eyed Peas.
Rocky Rock has swept up turntable competitions, including DMC and the Vestax World Championship Extravaganza, where he was the runner-up. He's opened for Linkin Park in Mexico City and Cypress Hill and Redman at LA's Shrine Auditorium.
Backing them up are some of Taiwan's own top turntablists. The Loop crew from Luxy finally get a chance to get some sun. They'll have a stage of their own. DJ Ty will take the hip hop stage with Motiv8 and Rocky rock. And Akira, Nina, Coffey, SL, DJones, Hooker, Kay, Michaelphonic, 26 and Phil will be on the "Houselicious" stage.
The cool thing about Summer Aquarian is its refund policy. Tickets to the event are NT$200 in advance or NT$300 at the gate. You'll get a wrist band ID with your paid admission and a trash bag. Fill the bag -- with trash, of course -- and you'll have NT$200 refunded to you! Check out http://www.summer-aquarian.com for additional ticket information, a downloadable map to Baishawan and public transport directions, as well as movies on body-boarding tips.
As for Ho-Hai-Yan, it will go ahead in two weeks, but with a reduced international lineup.
You could say that Darren Emerson is the guy from famous UK techno group Underworld, but it's probably more accurate to say that Underworld is the band made famous by Darren Emerson. A DJ since his early teens, Emerson had earned a name in dance music circles before he earned a driver's license.
He joined Underworld, his brother-in-law's band, just as it was falling apart and became its DJ and producer, proving to be the missing ingredient to give the band pizzazz. With songs like Dubnobasswithmyheadman, Everything, A Hundred Days and Beaucoup Fish, Underworld enjoyed its share of success, but Emerson pined for his days as a solo DJ.
He left Underworld in 2000 and resurfaced as a DJ and has been burning up dance floors worldwide ever since. He's at Luxy tonight.
UPCOMING: Hip-hop artist Kurupt at Ministry of Sound next Friday, July 29; Luxy's Summer Jam 2005, with Underground Nation, Enferno and E-Turn, Saturday, July 30.
