Last Friday there were two blasts from the past, with Boy George throwing a hissy fit and baiting the audience by simulating fellatio while playing at Ministry of Sound; and the same night an amiable Chozie played a delightful set at Eden and showed that star DJs don't have to be a pain in the ass.
Tonight at Ministry of Sound, resident DJ Buff Wise will be plying the decks. Tomorrow it will be ATFC, a house outfit from the UK.
As for Chozie, who is still recovering from a car accident three months ago in China, it was good to know that promoters here still appreciate his talents. He was taken around the island for shows in Taichung, Kaohsiung and Taipei, and his session at Eden on Friday was low-key and a lot of fun.
Though he still cuts a dashing figure, Chozie showed us his "battle scars" from his crash, the worst of which is on his leg, which you can feel popping and grinding when he lifts it. Euuuugggh.
Tomorrow night, DJ @llen reprises 12 months of his brainchild Love Groove at Eden, which has increasingly become a hangout for foreigners and models. Those with "yellow fever" -- boys and girls -- might look for action elsewhere, but fans of the "godfather of Taiwanese house music" will be looking forward to a long set from the maestro, as his partner for Love Groove, Taipei Times' top-rated DJ Nina, heads to Taichung for the night.
The party in the mountains above Taichung is a follow-up to the massive Peace Tree Party last month. "Dong Hai" will have two stages, 12 DJs and six bands. Organizer Ant, aka Chi Funk, has snagged Chicken Rice to play live, along with Rocket Grrl!, Chasing Sparrow, Chrome Relic, Wiseman Hoover and the Lux Sound System. Alex D, Marcus Aurelius, Wamp, D'Jones, Kriz and others will be on the decks. See www.revevolution.com for details. Tickets cost NT$400 before 11pm.
"This one is all about diversity," Ant said in an e-mail to The Vinyl Word. "We're expecting tonnes of colorful people. And we've got a rainbow of sounds lined up for them. Getting people from different genres together stimulates everyone's creative impulses. Lately a lot of bands and DJs have been getting together in Taichung for Live sets. This party features a few of the best."
At Luxy tonight, in a change from the advertised program, DJ Jay Sample from Bali is breezing in. Tomorrow its "Techno-Phonic" with DJ Vertigo; and in the midweek we have Liquid Lifestyle's "3rd Heaven," the ladies night with the biggest pull in town.
At Party Room tonight there's a Friday the 13th party, with hip hop from DJ Domination and MCs Fox and Yen. It's NT$500 for the men and NT$350 for the ladies. You're expected to "drink all night long."
