The Vinyl Word

If you stayed at home last Saturday and Sunday, chances are you've already heard you missed a candidate for party weekend of the summer.

It started off on a bum note with a poor show at Ministry of Sound (MoS) on Friday, but kicked into top gear with DJ Badboy Bill at Luxy and a weekend-long rock show plus an all-night beach party on Saturday.

NuBreed at MoS was one of the most disappointing shows the venue has hosted, with the three-man DJ crew out of Australia letting down a big crowd that was ready to party.

On Saturday, spillover from the Gungliao Ho-Hai-Yan Rock Festival in Fulung coasted down to nearby Dahsi beach for David Hasselhoff's 52nd birthday celebration, which went off with a bang at the Thigh Tide party.

As it turned out there were two raves going, so the small event ballooned into an all-out bikini-dance fest. The sun was well over the horizon by the time the fat lady started singing and performances by DJs MaXXX, K Fancy, Marcus Aurelius, J4 and Hooker kept the sand churned and the spirits high.

This weekend there's going to be more bikinis and bunnies. Some will say this is sexism and will cast further aspersions against hip hop and its culture, but The Vinyl Word is apt to encourage blatant exhibitionism, unrequited alcohol abuse and generally debauched party behavior.

Liquid Lifestyle seems to be leading the way in this respect and the Babewatch Taipei party tomorrow at the Green Forest Plaza opposite the National Palace Museum on 32, Ln 266, Zhishan Road, Shihlin district, Taipei (台北市士林區至善路二段266能32號) is our pick of the week.

Beginning at 2pm and ending at 10pm, the party is being touted as a follow-up celebration to the infamous but hugely enjoyable Babewatch party in Kenting during the Spring Break. This time around the focus will be on the poolside rather than seaside.

We are promised burgers, beach balls and phat tunes, hot-body contests and the signature wet-T-shirt contest. If you keep your bracelet, there's also free entry to Room 18 later for Party Clan, where DJ Ralph M will be laying down the beats and Mr RE will be rapping.

DJ Rocky Rock has been flown over from the US for the Babewatch event. He's the DMC West Coast battle champion and has an international reputation. Joining the Rock and with a 10-year track record in house and hip hop, DJ Dave Cee is cementing his reputation overseas. At Luxy's well-attended Fresh party on Wednesday, he said he was looking forward to "the ultimate party" and would be putting on a "banging set."

Dave Cee, a native of Orange County who's been running the LA scene with manager Stevie Wonderful has Taiwanese parents but has not visited the country for eight years. "I'm real excited to be here and have been pretty impressed by the scene. I've been here a few days and have been out every night."

"Back home, my DJ schedule is pretty hectic and I've started producing as well. But this is a good opportunity to get heard outside the States, so I'm here and it's gonna be good. Very good."

Tonight, there's the Good Vibe party at Stage, 22, Songshou Road (台北市松壽路22B1), with DJs Noodle, Timixer, Mitch, Yunfu and Tommy. At MoS in Neihu there's house music from the UK with Samba la Casa.

Tomorrow, it's Japan's DJ Ohnishi at X-Direction, B1, 8, Jilong Road, Sec 1, Taipei (台北市基隆路一段8號B1). Finally, there's Bunny Mansion at Luxy, with Playboy centerfold Miss Sundea on the decks. Wear a playboy logo and get a free Citrus CD. Wear a bunny outfit and get drinks and a free Citrus CD. Bunny boys anyone?
