Peter Pan has not gained much since the first Disney animation classic nearly 50 years ago, and Return to Never Land uses the simple expedient of moving the story on one generation. The scene is WWII England, but now Wendy has grown up and it her daughter, who has been brought up to believe the stories of Peter Pan while her mother has gradually come to disbelieve them, must now face the vengeful wrath of Captain Hook. There is an officious motivational subtext that appears in the oft repeated slogan that all it takes is "faith, trust and pixie dust" for a person to fly without wings. There is also, almost inevitably, a song called I'll Try, in case you missed the message. While the technical mastery of modern animation is definitely up to standard, it is hard not to think that the whole thing was best kept where J.M. Barrie left it.
