The daughter of a Russian emigrant to the US winds up in England instead of America, where she is renamed Suzie and raised by a British family. Many years later, her talent for singing and dancing gains her entry to a dance troupe in Paris. Once there, she befriends another Russian dancer named Lola, an egocentric tenor named Dante and a gypsy named Cesar played by Johnny Depp (apparently double cast for the same role in Chocolat ). She falls for the mysterious, brooding wanderer and, when the Nazis march on Paris, Suzie must choose between her love for Cesar or going to America to search for her father.
