    Letter: Who supports Ma?

    By Bill Parkhurst

    Saturday, Apr 01, 2006, Page 8

Many Taiwanese right now may be wondering about the US' stance towards Taiwan. First of all, we must remember that most Americans just think of Taiwan as a major hotbed and place to avoid because of potential bloodshed.

After the second term of A-bian's [President Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁)] government, we now see the specter of a possible win by the former masters of a non-democratic Taiwan. So we tremble at the thought and wonder if this will bring the communists into power as well.

Democracy has allowed the Taiwanese to govern themselves. Now democracy may be the spoon that feeds the devil. And if you dine with the devil you had better bring a long spoon.

Let us remember that the US State Department is the voice most associated with what other countries are told is the will of the American people. Actually most Americans are unaware the State Department wields such extraordinary power.

Now the new blue Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) Chairman Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) is gallivanting around the US, knowing full well his message of selling Taiwan to China sells well to a Republican government, which did the same thing a few decades ago under former US secretary of state Henry Kissinger.

Hang in there, Taiwan. As Winston Churchill said: "The truth always comes to pass."
