Nanya Technology Corp (南亞科技), the nation’s biggest maker of computer memory, or dynamic random access memory (DRAM), yesterday posted its highest monthly sales in two years after prices rebounded amid reduced supply.
Last month, Nanya Technology’s sales jumped almost 39 percent to NT$4.56 billion (US$141.18 million), compared with NT$3.29 billion in the same period last year, the company said in a statement. This was the strongest monthly sales figure since August 2007, when the Taoyuan-based chipmaker made NT$4.84 billion.
Despite the improvement, Nanya said it had yet to make a profit. Nanya rose contract prices by 20 percent month-on-month last month and expects more increases this month.
Smaller rival Powerchip Semiconductor Corp (力晶半導體) said yesterday that sales last month reached a one-year high at NT$3.31 billion on recovering prices. Its sales in September last year were NT$3.82 billion.
Powerchip said Rexchip Electronics Inc (瑞晶電子), a PC memory joint venture with Japan’s Elpida Memory Inc, returned to profitability last month.
Rexchip could break even in the third quarter, Powerchip spokesman Eric Tang (譚仲民) said.
The spot price for mainstream DDR2 chips rose 1.01 percent to US$1.99 per unit yesterday, market researcher DRAMeXchange Technology Inc (集邦科技) said.
