    Manufacturers 'cautiously optimistic'

Manufacturers are cautiously optimistic about the economic outlook for the next six months, although rising raw material prices will dilute their profits in the peak fourth quarter, a survey released by the Taiwan Institute of Economic Research (TIER, 台經院) yesterday showed.

Among the respondents polled by TIER last month, 26.3 percent said the economy would be in better shape for the next six months, down from 39.4 percent in the last poll. Those who think the economy will get worse dropped to 18.6 percent, down from 19.1 percent, TIER said.

As a result, the business climate index for the manufacturing industry last month was 123.21 points, up by 1.61 points from August.
