New group to promote wind energy technology

CNA , TAIPEI

The Taiwan Wind Energy Association (台灣風能協會), initiated by the Industrial Technology Research Institute, was launched in Taipei yesterday to promote wind energy technology in electricity generation.

Chu Hsin-sen (曲新生), vice president of the Industrial Technology Research Institute, said at an inauguration ceremony that wind energy is the trend of the future, and the association will help local firms become top-10 companies in the global wind-energy industry.

Chu said the association will also serve as a think tank for the government by advising it on the development of wind energy.

Noting that the world's combined capacity for wind turbines was 47,616.4 million kilowatts in 2004, with Asia accounting for 16 percent, Chu said there is great potential for growth.
