A Chinese woman became the first person to reach the summit of Mount Everest this season, officials said on Saturday, but the climb was clouded by controversy because she took a helicopter part of the way.
Forty-one-year-old Wang Jing (王靜), reached Everest summit late on Friday, accompanied by five Nepalese sherpas, tourism ministry official Madhusudhan Burlakoti told reporters.
“Wang is the first climber to scale Mount Everest from Nepal side and they are now on way back,” he said.

Yet he said that the Nepalese officials had not yet decided whether to log the climb as an official ascent of the 8,848m mountain because she used a helicopter for a big part of the way.
The ascent comes just over a month after an avalanche killed 16 Nepalese guides in the deadliest ever accident on Mount Everest, spurring a virtual shutdown of the world’s tallest peak.
Wang and a US woman climber had decided to fly to Camp 2 on Everest because the route below, normally prepared by Sherpas beforehand with ropes and ladders, had not been completed this season.

The climbers were thought to be the first back on the mountain since many expeditions left over the April 18 disaster.
“We have not yet made any decisions whether to recognize the ascent by using helicopters,” Burlakoti said.
“We are positive with the attempt she [Wang] made,” he said.
“We are happy to acknowledge that Wang and Sherpas took the risk and made the dangerous attempt this season,” Burlakoti said.
Wang flew to Camp 2, an advance base camp at an elevation of 6,400m where climbers spend time to adjust to the increased altitude.
Earlier, flights were made to Camp 2 to transport equipment or in event of medical emergencies, not to transport climbers.
“With this successful summit to Mount Everest this season, we hope to see other climbers to scale Mount Everest this season,” Burlakoti added.
The window for climbing Everest lasts until May 25, after which the temperature gets warmer and the mountain more dangerous.
The government has stressed the mountain is still open for business, despite the effective closure of the season, normally a key revenue earner for the impoverished country.
Most climbers abandoned plans to ascend Everest from the Nepalese side — the easiest and most popular route up the world’s highest peak — after the avalanche.
The tourism ministry official said there was yet to be any contact with the US climber, Cleonice Weidlich, 51, who landed at Camp 2 on May 8.
The mountaineer was heading alone for neighboring Lhotse Peak. Lhotse and Everest share the same route as far as Camp 3.
Meanwhile, a female Indian climber, Chhanda Gayen, and two Sherpas were still missing after being hit on Tuesday by an avalanche while climbing Mount Kanchenjunga, the world’s third-highest mountain.
ROCKY RELATIONS: The figures on residents come as Chinese tourist numbers drop following Beijing’s warnings to avoid traveling to Japan The number of Chinese residents in Japan has continued to rise, even as ties between the two countries have become increasingly fractious, data released on Friday showed. As of the end of December last year, the number of Chinese residents had increased by 6.5 percent from the previous year to 930,428. Chinese people accounted for 22.6 percent of all foreign residents in Japan, making them by far the largest group, Japanese Ministry of Justice data showed. Beijing has criticized Tokyo in increasingly strident terms since Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi last year suggested that a military conflict around Taiwan could
A pro-Iran hacking group claimed to breach FBI Director Kash Patel’s personal e-mail inbox and posted some of the contents online. The e-mails provided by the hacking group include travel details, correspondence with leasing agents in Washington and global entry, and loyalty account numbers. The e-mail address the hackers claim to have compromised has been previously tied to Patel’s personal details, and the leaked e-mails contain photos of Patel and others, in addition to correspondence with family members and colleagues. “The FBI is aware of malicious actors targeting Director Patel’s personal email information,” the agency said in a statement on
RIVALRY: ‘We know that these are merely symbolic investigations initiated by China, which is in fact the world’s most profligate disrupter of supply chains,’ a US official said China has started a pair of investigations into US trade practices, retaliating against similar probes by US President Donald Trump’s administration as the superpowers stake out positions before an expected presidential summit in May. The move, announced by the Chinese Ministry of Commerce on Friday, is a direct mirror of steps Trump took to revive his tariff agenda after the US Supreme Court last month struck down some of his duties. “China expresses its strong dissatisfaction and firm opposition to these actions,” a ministry spokesperson said in a statement, referring to the so-called Section 301 investigations initiated on March 11.
When a hiker fell from a 55m waterfall in wild New Zealand bush, rescuers were forced to evacuate the badly hurt woman without her dog, which could not be found. After strangers raised thousands of dollars for a search, border collie Molly was flown to safety by a helicopter pilot who was determined to reunite the pet and the owner. A week earlier, an emergency rescue helicopter found the woman with bruises and lacerations after a fall at a rocky spot at the waterfall on the South Island’s West Coast. She was airlifted on March 24, but they were forced to
