Li Hongyi, 20, is serving his compulsory military duty as a platoon commander in the armed forces. He alleged in an e-mail that one of his superiors went absent without leave but was not punished, said Colonel Benedict Lim, director of public affairs at the Ministry of Defense.
On June 28, Li sent the e-mail to hundreds of military personnel including the Chief of Defense Force and the Chief of Army, as well as Defense Minister Teo Chee Hean, the Today newspaper reported. The e-mail led to an investigation leading to a court martial for the AWOL officer and a warning for his supervisors.
Li was formally charged and received a reprimand after a summary trial, Lim said.
National service of about two years is compulsory for all male Singaporeans and permanent residents ages 16 to 40.
