Local leisure agriculture operators won at the World Agri Tourism Awards this year, reflecting Taiwan’s commitment to promoting rural regeneration and agritourism internationalization, the Agency of Rural Development and Soil and Water Conservation said yesterday.

Stella Huang (黃資婷), who runs Xing Yuan Tea Farm (星源茶園) in Yilan County’s Dongshan Township (冬山), earned the Women Leadership in Agri Tourism award for her trailblazing leadership as a woman in advancing agritourism, the agency said.
She combined tea culture with ecological education and sustainable agriculture to create immersive agritourism experiences, it said.
Tourists visiting her tea farm can experience tea picking and other hands-on tea-related activities, such as making green tea ice cream, the agency said.

The award not only recognizes Huang’s management ability, but also signals the rise of women’s status in rural areas of Taiwan, it said.
Located in Tainan’s Dongshan District (東山) and operated by the married couple Ding Jing-chun (丁敬純) and Wu Kai-ching (吳侃薔), Senwho Leisure Farm (仙湖休閒農場) received the Best Agri Tourism in Cultural and Heritage Conservation award for their long-term dedication to promoting traditional rural culture, the agency said.
Senwho Leisure Farm is in the district’s lowland hill area, where traditional methods of producing wood-smoked dried longan have been passed down for 100 years, it said.
Ding and Wu reshaped the spatial design of traditional kiln-houses for longan roasting, transforming the traditional rural culture into an agritourism experience that tourists can enjoy, the agency said.
It marked a shift from preserving local cultures to representing them as life aesthetics, it said, adding that the couple also helped promote food and agriculture education by integrating other local food cultures, including coffee and honey.
Their being honored with the award symbolized an outstanding benchmark from Taiwan in revitalizing and preserving global cultural heritage, the agency said.
The award ceremony is to be held at the Inaugural Global Agri Tourism Conference in Aberdeen, Scotland, on June 25.

More than half of the bamboo vipers captured in Tainan in the past few years were found in the city’s Sinhua District (新化), while other districts had smaller catches or none at all. Every year, Tainan captures about 6,000 snakes which have made their way into people’s homes. Of the six major venomous snakes in Taiwan, the cobra, the many-banded krait, the brown-spotted pit viper and the bamboo viper are the most frequently captured. The high concentration of bamboo vipers captured in Sinhua District is puzzling. Tainan Agriculture Bureau Forestry and Nature Conservation Division head Chu Chien-ming (朱健明) earlier this week said that the
The Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) caucus yesterday said it opposes the introduction of migrant workers from India until a mechanism is in place to prevent workers from absconding. Minister of Labor Hung Sun-han (洪申翰) on Thursday told the Legislative Yuan that the first group of migrant workers from India could be introduced as early as this year, as part of a government program. The caucus’ opposition to the policy is based on the assessment that “the risk is too high,” KMT caucus secretary-general Lin Pei-hsiang (林沛祥) said. Taiwan has a serious and long-standing problem of migrant workers absconding from their contracts, indicating that
