A man with a prior criminal record this morning stabbed a police officer twice in the head before being shot by another officer at a market in Miaoli, the Miaoli County Police Department said.
The 40-year-old man, surnamed Chung (鍾), succumbed to his injuries earlier today, while the officer remains in intensive care, it said.
A vendor at Nan Miao Market (南苗市場) in Miaoli City said that the man tried to borrow a mobile phone from his wife at about 7:30am and, upon being refused, brandished a knife at a market stall.

A market administrator approached Chung, who said he was looking for someone who owed him money and refused to put the knife down, the vendor said.
Police said they tried to de-escalate the situation and ordered Chung to drop the weapon before deploying pepper spray.
Chung then stabbed one officer twice in the head, before another officer intervened and opened fire, shooting Chung in the chest and abdomen, the Miaoli precinct said.
One shot accidentally hit a civilian in the left hand, it said.
Chung, the civilian and the stabbed officer were transferred to Miaoli General Hospital and Da Chien General Hospital for treatment, it said.
Chung was later pronounced dead after emergency surgery to treat injuries to his upper left arm, left chest and left abdomen, Miaoli District Prosecutors’ Office said.
The civilian remained conscious and was undergoing treatment as of press time, it added.
The officer sustained two wounds — a 7cm gash on his left forehead and a 10cm wound on the top of his head — as well as significant blood loss of up to 1 liter, Miaoli General Hospital said.
His condition stabilized after doctors performed emergency suturing and a blood transfusion, it said.
However, a CT scan later revealed partial skull fractures and he remains in intensive care, it added.
Police discharged their weapons in accordance with the Act Governing the Use of Police Weapons (警械使用條例), the precinct said.
Chung had previously operated a stall at Houlong Market (後龍市場) and had prior criminal records, including attempted murder and assault, police said, adding that the case remains under investigation.
