The University System of Taipei (USTP) yesterday signed an agreement with Japan’s Six National Universities International Education and Research System (SixERS) to establish a bilateral student exchange program for the 10 universities of the two systems.
The agreement was signed by National Taipei University of Technology (NTUT) president Wang Hsi-fu (王錫福) and Okayama University vice president Takayoshi Suzuki at the fifth USTP-SixERS joint symposium at the NTUT.
USTP consists of NTUT, National Taipei University, Taipei Medical University and the National Taiwan Ocean University.

SixERS is composed of Okayama University, Nagasaki University, Kumamoto University, Chiba University, Niigata University and Kanazawa University.
USTP and SixERS have continued to deepen their relationship since the two systems signed their first memorandum of understanding in 2020, Wang said.
The agreement officially established a mechanism for student exchanges between USTP and SixERS, laying a solid foundation for future joint research and academic cooperation, he said.
The symposium represents continued Taiwan-Japan collaboration in academia and is also an important platform for both sides to jointly promote sustainability initiatives, Okayama University president Yasutomo Nasu said.
The theme of the fifth symposium is “Toward Sustainable Societies: Greeting Education and Nature-Based Solutions,” echoing UNESCO’s “education for sustainable development for 2030” program, he said.
That foregrounded the pivotal role of higher education in achieving sustainable development goals and provoked thinking about how universities can contribute to a more sustainable, more resilient future, he added.
To encourage youth participation, a youth session was set up at this year’s symposium to invite students from the two systems’ 10 universities to participate in online or on-site activities to present their perspectives and action plans.
