To celebrate the 39th anniversary of the Democratic Progressive Party’s (DPP) founding today, the party is focusing on the theme of “Return to our local roots, back to our original ideals,” a source said this week.
“There is no special focus on the anniversary this year, with the dinner at the Grand Hotel to honor veteran party members, as there would be a large commemoration event for the 40th anniversary next year, coinciding with the local elections,” said the source, a party insider who asked not to be named.
The DPP was established by 132 founding members at the hotel in Taipei’s Zhongshan District (中山) on Sept. 28, 1986, when Taiwan was still under martial law and the establishment of new political parties was not allowed.

Among the plans for the event today is a viewing of a documentary about party members working at the grassroots level, with artificial intelligence “bringing back to life” prominent party figures and their key addresses, the source said.
“The documentary revives memories of the pioneers of Taiwan’s democratic movement, their core values, and their struggle for freedom and human rights,” the source said.
“It would allow young generations to get to know them and remember their legacy,” they said.
Considering that most countries issue more than five denominations of banknotes, the central bank has decided to redesign all five denominations, the bank said as it prepares for the first major overhaul of the banknotes in more than 24 years. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) yesterday reported the first case of a new COVID-19 subvariant — BA.3.2 — in a 10-year-old Singaporean girl who had a fever upon arrival in Taiwan and tested positive for the disease.
