A budget of more than NT$20 billion (US$655 million) would be allocated for the Ministry of Sports which is to be set up next month, as the Executive Yuan approved the central government budget today, President William Lai (賴清德) said at a meeting with the athletes, coaches and staff that represented Taiwan at the World Games in Chengdu, China this month.
Taiwan’s heroes have returned, Lai said.

Team Taiwan had its best result at a World Games event outside Taiwan, and its second-best performance ever, winning five gold medals, six silver and four bronze, Lai said.
On Sept. 9, this year’s National Sports Day, the government is to inaugurate the new Ministry of Sports, Lai said.
The goal would be to strengthen Taiwan through sports and create a better sporting environment in the country, he added.
In addition to the National Sports Training Center and the Taiwan Institute of Sports Science, the government would also move to establish a national sports administration and national sports development center, Lai said.
Sports are a symbol of national strength and upgrading the Sports Administration to a full ministry would elevate its status, provide it with more resources and incorporate cross-disciplinary expertise, Lai said.
Eight Chinese naval vessels and 24 military aircraft were detected crossing the median line of the Taiwan Strait between 6am yesterday and 6am today, the Ministry of National Defense said this morning. The aircraft entered Taiwan’s northern, central, southwestern and eastern air defense identification zones, the ministry said. The New Taipei Metro's Sanyin Line and the eastern extension of the Taipei Metro's Tamsui-Xinyi Line (Red Line) are scheduled to begin operations in June, the National Development Council said today.
