New Taipei City’s Tamsui District (淡水) is set to host three themed fireworks shows and festivals next month as part of the “Tamsui Fisherman's Wharf Midsummer Fun” festival, the city government said today.
While the fireworks shows are to begin at 8pm, there are to be events and attractions all day, featuring fashion shows, DJ performances, concerts and food stands, the New Taipei City Fisheries and Fishing Port Affairs Management Office said.
The theme on Aug. 10 is to be “eternal love songs,” featuring pink and red hearts and jellyfish-shaped fireworks paired with love songs to create a romantic atmosphere, it said.

On Aug. 17, the theme is to be “reflection of the dock,” featuring sea blue and lemon yellow fireworks in the shape of ornamental plants and rain-shaped special effects to recreate the rhythm of the harbor, it said.
Finally, on Aug. 24, the theme would be “Lover’s Bridge,” showcasing special arch-shaped fireworks to symbolize people holding hands and fireworks in the shape of peonies and dahlias to create a “flower rain,” it said.
In addition to fireworks, the events would also feature other activities, the office said.
On Aug. 10, award-winning designer Gioia Pan (潘怡良) is to host a fashion show around the themes of “fireworks” and “fishing,” with the clothes’ outdoor functional style serving as a promotion for 12 fishing-friendly zones in New Taipei City, it said.
On the evening of Aug. 17, the fireworks show would be accompanied by musical performances by DJ Ricky Liu (劉丞), up-and-coming singer Jiong Ming (黃炯銘), and singing duo Kezine (張菡) and Z Chuan (朱全).
For Aug. 24, the New Taipei Metro invited folk singers to provide a closing performance to accompany the fireworks.

MOTIVES QUESTIONED The PLA considers Xi’s policies toward Taiwan to be driven by personal considerations rather than military assessment, the Epoch Times reports Chinese President Xi Jinping’s (習近平) latest purge of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) leadership might have been prompted by the military’s opposition to plans of invading Taiwan, the Epoch Times said. The Chinese military opposes waging war against Taiwan by a large consensus, putting it at odds with Xi’s vision, the Falun Gong-affiliated daily said in a report on Thursday, citing anonymous sources with insight into the PLA’s inner workings. The opposition is not the opinion of a few generals, but a widely shared view among the PLA cadre, the Epoch Times cited them as saying. “Chinese forces know full well that
