The Legislative Yuan today approved a bill paving the way for the establishment of a national ocean technology operations center.
Under the bill, which passed its third reading without opposition, the new center would be tasked with conducting oceanographic surveys, developing experimental marine technologies and managing the operation of Taiwan's national marine research fleet.
The center would be responsible for specialized infrastructure, including a ship model testing lab, and be required to train marine technology professionals, the bill states.

The Ocean Affairs Council, which would supervise the center, said in a statement that the ship model testing laboratory's main structure is under construction and is expected to be completed by 2027.
Several new research vessels under the center's management are also scheduled to be delivered in 2027, the council added.

A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck off the coast of Yilan County at 8:39pm tonight, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) said, with no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
