The Legislative Yuan today passed an amendment extending tax breaks for energy-efficient appliances until Dec. 31, 2029, four days before they were due to expire.
Article 11-1 of the Commodity Tax Act (貨物稅條例) reduces taxes on new energy-efficient refrigerators, air-conditioners and dehumidifiers by NT$2,000 per unit.
The reduction was set to expire on Saturday, before lawmakers passed the amendment to keep it in effect.

The act only applies to new appliances that are classified as first or second-level energy efficiency by the Ministry of Economic Affairs.
The Executive Yuan in its version of the amendment approved on May 1 extended the NT$2,000 tax break by two more years to Dec. 31, 2027, with an optional two-year extension depending on its results.
At the time, Premier Cho Jung-tai (卓榮泰) said the amendment would move the nation closer to its net-zero emissions goal for 2050, increase the availability of energy-saving appliances and move the industry forward.
Lawmakers subsequently passed the amendment, foregoing the option of the two-year extension to keep the tax reduction in effect for more than four years until Dec. 31, 2029.

South Korea is planning to revise its controversial electronic arrival card, a step Taiwanese officials said prompted them to hold off on planned retaliatory measures, a South Korean media report said yesterday.
