President William Lai (賴清德) yesterday thanked Guatemala and the US for their support of Taiwan and said he looked forward to seeing enhanced trilateral trade ties.
In a social media post, Lai thanked Guatemalan President Bernardo Arévalo and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio for "expressing firm support for the relationship shared by Taiwan, Guatemala and the US."
"Our continued joint efforts to bolster trade and investment pave the way for greater prosperity and stronger economic ties," Lai said.

The comments came shortly after Rubio visited the Central American nation and met with Arévalo.
In response to a reporter's question on Wednesday, Arévalo, who assumed the role of Guatemalan president in January last year, reaffirmed his administration's commitment to maintain diplomatic ties with Taiwan.
"We maintain our diplomatic relationship with Taiwan and we hope to be able to ... further develop it in terms of economics and investment," the Guatemalan leader said at a joint news conference with Rubio following their meeting.
Guatemala is one of 12 countries maintaining formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan.
Meanwhile, Rubio said the US was dedicated to helping expand bilateral ties between Taiwan and Guatemala "beyond just the diplomatic realm to an economic one."
"We'll do all we can to facilitate more Taiwanese investment in the economy of Guatemala so that it can continue to grow into the advanced, prosperous [and] 21st-century economy," he added.
Rubio's visit to Guatemala is part of his first Latin American tour after he became the secretary of state on Jan. 25.
The tour from Feb. 1 to yesterday also included stops in Panama, El Salvador, Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic.
Taiwan is stepping up plans to create self-sufficient supply chains for combat drones and increase foreign orders from the US to counter China’s numerical superiority, a defense official said on Saturday. Commenting on condition of anonymity, the official said the nation’s armed forces are in agreement with US Admiral Samuel Paparo’s assessment that Taiwan’s military must be prepared to turn the nation’s waters into a “hellscape” for the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA). Paparo, the commander of the US Indo-Pacific Command, reiterated the concept during a Congressional hearing in Washington on Wednesday. He first coined the term in a security conference last

Sung Chien-liang (宋建樑), who led efforts to recall Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Legislator Lee Kun-cheng (李坤城), was released on bail of NT$80,000 today amid outcry over his decision to wear a Nazi armband to questioning the night before. Sung arrived at the New Taipei District Prosecutors’ Office for questioning in a recall petition forgery case last night wearing a red armband bearing a swastika, carrying a copy of Adolf Hitler’s Mein Kampf and giving a Nazi salute. Sung left the building at 1:15am without the armband and covering the book with his coat. Lee said today that this is a serious
