Taiwan People’s Party (TPP) Chairman Ko Wen-je (柯文哲) formally resigned as the party’s leader today, leaving TPP Legislator Huang Kuo-chang (黃國昌) in charge as acting chairman.
Ko held an emergency meeting of the TPP’s Central Committee this afternoon to discuss party leadership, after the former Taipei mayor was released on bail earlier this week while awaiting trial in four separate cases involving corruption, embezzlement and other charges.
Ko during the meeting formally resigned as TPP chairman, but would remain a party member and volunteer, TPP Taichung chapter head Chiang Ho-shu (江和樹) told reporters.

Fourteen of the 15 committee members voted in a show of hands to appoint Huang as acting chair, with only Huang himself abstaining from the vote, Chiang said.
Chiang said he hopes TPP supporters remember that Ko was “forced” into the decision, which he made out of love for the party.

US climber Alex Honnold is to attempt to scale Taipei 101 without a rope and harness in a live Netflix special on Jan. 24, the streaming platform announced on Wednesday. Starting on Jan. 1, YouBike riders must have insurance to use the service, and a six-month trial of NT$5 coupons under certain conditions would be implemented to balance bike shortages, a joint statement from transportation departments across Taipei, New Taipei City and Taoyuan announced yesterday.
