The Nicaraguan government on Wednesday shuttered four associations with ties to Taiwan after the Central American country two years ago cut official diplomatic relations with the nation in favor of China.
The Nicaraguan Ministry of the Interior said that the assets of the four associations — including the Taiwanese Chamber of Commerce in Nicaragua and the Taiwanese-Nicaraguan Business Chamber — would be transferred to the state.
The government accused the associations of not submitting their financial statements as required by regulations for non-profit entities, a notice in the government gazette said.

The shuttering of the four bodies also comes in the context of a government crackdown on non-governmental organizations, of which about 3,500 have been closed since 2018.
