Democratic Progressive Party Keelung City Councilor Tong Tzu-wei (童子瑋) yesterday called on the city to investigate the safety of a residential building in which large cracks have appeared.
Residents expressed concern after large cracks appeared in support columns and floors of a residential building, which is next to a construction site on Baiyi Street in the city’s Cidu District (七堵). Cracks in some parts of the columns were large enough to insert a hand into, and those in parts of the ground floor were large enough to insert a NT$50 coin into, Tong said.

Residents have been particularly concerned after an incident in Taipei’s Dazhi Borough last week in which a building next to a construction site partially collapsed, he said. A power pole next to the construction site sank 2m in May causing work at the site to be temporarily halted.
Tong said he has asked the city’s Department of Urban Development to hire a third party to conduct a safety inspection of the building within a month.

Police officers yesterday morning apprehended the prime suspect of a triple homicide case, after raiding the suspect’s hideout in Taichung.
