All 2G connections are inherently fraudulent, Chunghwa Telecom warned on Monday, amid a spate of cases in which people have been receiving phishing messages sent through the outdated network.
All 2G base stations in Taiwan were discontinued in 2017, meaning that if a phone shows it has connected to a 2G network, the station is being operated illegally, the telecom said in a news release.
Chunghwa Telecom said it is working quickly to develop an update to its app that would automatically detect and warn the user if there is a fraudulent network nearby.

Three Taiwanese airlines have prohibited passengers from packing Bluetooth earbuds and their charger cases in checked luggage. EVA Air and Uni Air said that Bluetooth earbuds and charger cases are categorized as portable electronic devices, which should be switched off if they are placed in checked luggage based on international aviation safety regulations. They must not be in standby or sleep mode. Temperatures in northern Taiwan are forecast to reach as high as 30°C today, as an ongoing northeasterly seasonal wind system weakens, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) said. CWA forecaster Tseng Chao-cheng (曾昭誠) said yesterday that with the seasonal wind system weakening, warmer easterly winds would boost the temperature today.
