Mayor General Chen Yu-lin (陳育琳), the deputy director of the Ministry of National Defense’s Political Warfare Bureau, is to become the first female lieutenant general in the Republic of China Army.
Chen is to be promoted on Saturday and appointed director of the Army Command Headquarters’ Political Warfare Department, becoming its first female head, a military source said on Saturday.
Chen is to succeed Yang An (楊安), who is to become director of the Political Warfare Bureau as its director, Chien Shih-wei (簡士偉), is to retire.

Chen has already achieved several “firsts” in her military career.
She was the first woman to be responsible for political warfare affairs at a defense command on an outlying island when she served under the Matsu Defense Command, and the first to head an army corps’ political warfare division with the Sixth Army Corps.
She was also the first female director at the ministry’s Political Warfare Cadres Academy and the first female deputy director of the Political Warfare Bureau.
Including Chen, there are four female active-duty major generals in the army.
The other three are Kung Chiung-yu (龔瓊玉), director of the Matsu Defense Command’s Political Warfare Department; Ku Li-tu (辜麗都), director of the Military Police Command’s Political Warfare Department; and Hsiao Jen-chin (蕭人瑾), director of the office of the deputy minister of national defense for communication, electronics and information.

Temperatures in northern Taiwan are forecast to reach as high as 30°C today, as an ongoing northeasterly seasonal wind system weakens, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) said. CWA forecaster Tseng Chao-cheng (曾昭誠) said yesterday that with the seasonal wind system weakening, warmer easterly winds would boost the temperature today. Daytime temperatures in northern Taiwan and Yilan County are expected to range from 28°C to 30°C today, up about 3°C from yesterday, Tseng said. Three Taiwanese airlines have prohibited passengers from packing Bluetooth earbuds and their charger cases in checked luggage. EVA Air and Uni Air said that Bluetooth earbuds and charger cases are categorized as portable electronic devices, which should be switched off if they are placed in checked luggage based on international aviation safety regulations. They must not be in standby or sleep mode.
