There are only 46 students at Hsiangtien Elementary School in a remote area of Changhua County’s Erlin Township (二林), but they have a big dream: To create 16 colorful mosaic frescoes with PET bottle caps.
The students have collected 100,000 bottle caps and about 8,000 have already been used to create seven mosaics that are displayed on the walls of the school, principal Huang Chih-hsian (黃至賢) said on Saturday.
The goal is to create 16 frescoes, Huang said.

A teachers initiated the art program last summer as a way of helping the children become more aware of the waste created by drinking bottled beverages and the importance of environmental protection.
The students were encouraged to collect discarded PET bottles, which are among the major pollutants in the world’s oceans, Huang said.
The mosaics focus on environmental protection themes, with the subjects of some of the finished frescoes ranging from rice paddies to the endangered Indo-Pacific humpback dolphin, Huang said.
