The number of fatalities from last month’s Color Play Asia disaster at the Formosa Fun Coast (八仙海岸) park has risen to five, after a 22-year-old woman who suffered burns to 90 percent of her body died early yesterday morning.
The Buddhist Tzu Chi General Hospital’s Taipei Branch said that Huang Hsiao-hsuan (黃小軒) died of multiple organ failure at 7:28am.
“Huang suffered second and third-degree burns over 90 percent of her body, as well as acute respiratory distress syndrome. She was immediately intubated after being rushed to the hospital on June 27,” hospital deputy superintendent Chang Yao-jen (張耀仁) said.
Chang said Huang stabilized following emergency treatment, but her organs started shutting down shortly afterwards.
“Huang’s condition took a turn for the worse on Saturday night. Despite the hospital’s best efforts, she passed away yesterday morning,” Chang said.
Chang added that Huang’s mother had wanted to donate her daughter’s organs, but the young woman’s injuries were too extensive.
Local media reported that Huang’s mother, Huang Mei-tsai (黃美才), who works six part-time cleaning jobs, plans to donate the money she is likely to receive from Tzu Chi, New Taipei City and Taoyuan City governments and the proprietors of Formosa Fun Coast to the families of the other fire victims.
She said that she was physically capable of earning more money and that she wanted to “clean her daughter’s karma” through this deed.
As of 10am yesterday, of the hundreds injured in the fire at the water park in New Taipei City’s Bali District (八里), 269 people remained in intensive care units and 213 were listed in critical condition, according to statistics released by the Ministry of Health and Welfare.
The ministry said it has imported a total of 70m2 (21.18 ping) of cadaver skin so far, of which 31m2 have been distributed to 23 hospitals nationwide. There are plans to import another 80m2.
