An online poll on “celebrity personalities with whom you would most like to have a one-night affair” has caused controversy as the results included a volleyball player from Kazakhstan who is only 17.
Taiwanese Internet portal Yahoo released the results of the poll on the eve of the Qixi Festival (七夕情人節), also known as Chinese Lovers’ Day, on Saturday.
Teenage volleyball playerer Sabina Altynbekova of Kazakhstan was voted No. 2 in the online poll.

A member of the Kazakhstan national volleyball team, 182cm Altybekova came to Taipei late last month to play in the Asian under-19 championships and the media and obsessed fans followed her every move on the volleyball court. Local media reported that Kazakhstan coach Nurlan Sadikov had complained it was too much of a distraction because all the media attention was focused only on Altynbekova and not the rest of the team.
Japanese porn star Yui Hatano topped the poll, with Altynbekova followed by South Korean actress Jun Ji-hyun, Taiwanese electropop diva Jeannie Hsieh (謝金燕) and entertainer Cheng Chia-chen (鄭佳甄) — better known as “Chicken Cutlet Girl” (雞排妹).
Female respondents voted their top five as South Korean actor Kim Soo-hyun, Taiwanese-Japanese actor Takeshi Kaneshiro (金城武), retired singer Jimmy Lin (林志穎), Taiwanese-American NBA star Jeremy Lin (林書豪) and Hong Kong singer Shawn Yue (余文樂).
“Sexual fantasy is a very private matter, and conducting such a poll is quite banal and meaningless,” gender issues campaigner Liao Yu-hui (廖玉蕙) said of the poll, pointing out it was inappropriate as Altybekova is only 17.
Taiwan Alliance for Advancement of Youth Rights and Welfare secretary-general Yeh Ta-hua (葉大華) said Altybekova is tall with a good figure, so she is bound to attract male attention, while few would realize that she is actually underage.
“The poll is used for commercial purposes to create news topics. I just hope people can take note of a celebrity’s talent and the professionalism of their work,” Yeh said.
Psychiatrist Yang Tsung-tsai (楊聰財) said netizens only have sexual fantasies by looking at pictures of celebrities, “so I would think the poll is mostly harmless, it will not put pressure on the celebrities.”
Cheng Tzu-leong (鄭自隆), a professor at National Chengchi University’s Department of Advertising, on the other hand, was highly critical.
“Sabina came to Taiwan as a student athlete, she is not a public figure and she is only 17, an underage female. Now she becomes a figure of ‘sexual fantasy,’ not of her own free will. The media should extol an athlete’s talent and professionalism. If not, then society is judging people based on their appearance,” Cheng said.
A Yahoo spokesperson said that the choices of celebrities in the poll were made by netizens, adding that “people can complain, but we did not receive any complaints about Sabina being nominated in this poll.”
According to the Internet portal, more than 70,000 Taiwanese took part in the poll.
A year-long renovation of Taipei’s Bangka Park (艋舺公園) began yesterday, as city workers fenced off the site and cleared out belongings left by homeless residents who had been living there. Despite protests from displaced residents, a city official defended the government’s relocation efforts, saying transitional housing has been offered. The renovation of the park in Taipei’s Wanhua District (萬華), near Longshan Temple (龍山寺), began at 9am yesterday, as about 20 homeless people packed their belongings and left after being asked to move by city personnel. Among them was a 90-year-old woman surnamed Wang (王), who last week said that she had no plans
China might accelerate its strategic actions toward Taiwan, the South China Sea and across the first island chain, after the US officially entered a military conflict with Iran, as Beijing would perceive Washington as incapable of fighting a two-front war, a military expert said yesterday. The US’ ongoing conflict with Iran is not merely an act of retaliation or a “delaying tactic,” but a strategic military campaign aimed at dismantling Tehran’s nuclear capabilities and reshaping the regional order in the Middle East, said National Defense University distinguished adjunct lecturer Holmes Liao (廖宏祥), former McDonnell Douglas Aerospace representative in Taiwan. TO BE APPEALED: The environment ministry said coal reduction goals had to be reached within two months, which was against the principle of legitimate expectation The Taipei High Administrative Court on Thursday ruled in favor of the Taichung Environmental Protection Bureau in its administrative litigation against the Ministry of Environment for the rescission of a NT$18 million fine (US$609,570) imposed by the bureau on the Taichung Power Plant in 2019 for alleged excess coal power generation. The bureau in November 2019 revised what it said was a “slip of the pen” in the text of the operating permit granted to the plant — which is run by Taiwan Power Co (Taipower) — in October 2017. The permit originally read: “reduce coal use by 40 percent from Jan.
‘SPEY’ REACTION: Beijing said its Eastern Theater Command ‘organized troops to monitor and guard the entire process’ of a Taiwan Strait transit China sent 74 warplanes toward Taiwan between late Thursday and early yesterday, 61 of which crossed the median line in the Taiwan Strait. It was not clear why so many planes were scrambled, said the Ministry of National Defense, which tabulated the flights. The aircraft were sent in two separate tranches, the ministry said. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday “confirmed and welcomed” a transit by the British Royal Navy’s HMS Spey, a River-class offshore patrol vessel, through the Taiwan Strait a day earlier. The ship’s transit “once again [reaffirmed the Strait’s] status as international waters,” the foreign ministry said. “Such transits by
