French director Luc Besson, director of the film Lucy, which was partly shot in Taipei, is to visit Taiwan next month, according to the film’s distributor.
Besson is scheduled to arrive in Taiwan on Aug. 18 for a two-day visit, United International Pictures said in a statement.
Lucy, starring US actress Scarlett Johansson, was also shot in Paris and New York. It features Johansson as a drug mule in Taiwan who gains supernatural abilities and becomes a fighting machine.
Lucy is scheduled for release in theaters on Aug. 6 in France, on Aug. 8 in the US and on Aug. 22 in Taiwan.
The trailer, released in April, shows Taipei street scenes, as well as the Taipei 101 skyscraper, the Taipei Railway Workshop, the Regent Taipei hotel, the Yongle Fabric Market and the Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport.
Lucy is the first big Hollywood film to be shot in Taiwan since Ang Lee’s (李安) 2012 adventure drama Life of Pi.
Filming of the action thriller stirred up a media frenzy in Taiwan in October last year, with some paparazzi reporters and photographers resorting to intrusive behavior and even car chases in their efforts to get close to the film’s cast and crew.
Despite the conflicts, which at one point prompted Besson to threaten to abort the Taipei shoot and pull his crew out, the director has said he had a great experience shooting in Taiwan.
