Former Eastern Multimedia Group chairman Gary Wang (王令麟), the oldest son of fugitive Rebar Asia Pacific Group founder Wang You-theng (王又曾), yesterday said he would report to Taipei prosecutors today to serve a 19-day prison sentence imposed for two forgery cases in the 2007 Rebar Asia Pacific Group embezzlement scandal.
Gary Wang was found guilty on two charges of forgery by the Taiwan High Court in November last year and was sentenced to two separate jail terms of six months and seven months. The court later decided he should serve only a one year prison term.
Gary Wang said that because he was detained for 346 days while under investigation, he would only have to serve 19 days in prison.
“It is mine and my brothers’ and sisters’ destiny to expiate my father’s sin and we hope that the damage done to Taiwanese society by the Rebar case can be minimized,” he said.
“Because most of my family members have been declared bankrupt, only I am able to work and repay the debt,” he added.
Wang You-theng, his wife Wang Chin She-ying (王金世英) and Gary Wang’s wife, Tsai Hsueh-ching (蔡雪卿), fled to the US and have remained on the police’s most-wanted list since 2007.
The ruling said the Wangs embezzled funds from their companies between 1998 and 2007.
Wang Lin-ke (王令可), the daughter of Wang You-theng, last week paid a fine to the Taipei District Prosecutors’ Office as part of a deal honoring her probation agreement, which enabled her to avoid a prison sentence.
Lawrence Wang (王令興), Wang You-theng’s youngest son, began a two-year prison term on June 15.
Wang Lin-ke and Lawrence Wang were found guilty for their role in the embezzlement scandal that hit their father’s firm in 2007.
