The Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) caucus yesterday demanded that the Bureau of Labor Insurance hold a conference before the end of the month to explain to labor unions across the country how the bureau manages and invests labor insurance and pension funds. The demand was made in response to a media report last Wednesday that the Land Bank account of the bureau's former chief Shih Che (史哲) had swollen by NT$391 million (US$12 million). Although it later proved to be a computer system error on the part of the bank, this has cast doubt on the bank's internal supervision mechanism, the caucus said. The caucus also questioned the bureau's fund monitoring system and requested a thorough examination of the funds' trustee system. Vice Chairman of the Council of Labor Affairs Kuo Fong-yu (郭芳煜) apologized and assured the labor union members that there would not be any problem with the money, the mechanism and management of the funds.
Alain Robert, known as the "French Spider-Man," praised Alex Honnold as exceptionally well-prepared after the US climber completed a free solo ascent of Taipei 101 yesterday. Robert said Honnold's ascent of the 508m-tall skyscraper in just more than one-and-a-half hours without using safety ropes or equipment was a remarkable achievement. A preclearance service to facilitate entry for people traveling to select airports in Japan would be available from Thursday next week to Feb. 25 at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport, Taoyuan International Airport Corp (TIAC) said on Tuesday. The service was first made available to Taiwanese travelers throughout the winter vacation of 2024 and during the Lunar New Year holiday. In addition to flights to the Japanese cities of Hakodate, Asahikawa, Akita, Sendai, Niigata, Okayama, Takamatsu, Kumamoto and Kagoshima, the service would be available to travelers to Kobe and Oita.
