The first Taiwanese graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, is scheduled to be commissioned by the Ministry of National Defense on June 14, military sources said yesterday.
Lee Wu-ling (李武陵), who graduates from West Point this month, will be commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Republic of China army at a ceremony to be held at the Chinese Military Academy (CMA) in Fengshan, Kaohsiung.
Lee attended Fengshan school as a freshman before going on to West Point four years ago.
Although Lee is the first Taiwanese to graduate from West Point, he not the only cadet from this country to study at the prestigious academy, whose graduates include two US presidents, several ambassadors, state governors and legislators.
Wu Chih-ting (吳致廷) is in the class of 2006 and Hung Wan-ting (洪琬婷)is in the class of 2007.
Hung graduated from the CMA last May and became the first Taiwanese coed to attend West Point in the nearly 80-year history of the CMA.
Her overall academic and physical records were among the top among students that were accepted by West Point last year under the foreign-student exchange program, CMA authorities said.

West Point began to recruit foreign students from Asia in 2000 through the US' liaison offices abroad. The American Institute in Taiwan has conducted a series of recruitment tests at CMA since then.
The CMA, in turn, has recommended six or seven outstanding cadets each year to sit the tests.
So far, only the four top scorers have been accepted to study at West Point.
A magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck off the coast of Hualien County in eastern Taiwan at 7pm yesterday, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) said.
