Outfielder Stuart Fairchild on Friday joined Taiwan’s national baseball team at the Taipei Dome to begin preparing for the World Baseball Classic (WBC) and delivered some hard-hit balls in batting practice despite potential jet lag.
Fairchild, whose mother is Taiwanese, is on Taiwan’s 30-man roster for the WBC, scheduled for Thursday to March 17.
He on Thursday arrived in Taiwan and yesterday left with the rest of the team for Japan, where the first round of the tournament is to be played.

Despite a 15-hour flight the day before, he told reporters before practice on Friday that he felt “pretty good” and hit several hard fly balls to the outfield during batting practice on pitches thrown by retired Taiwanese MLB pitcher Chen Wei-yin.
Chen praised Fairchild’s swing speed, angle control and power despite his modest frame, and said he looked forward to Fairchild’s contribution to Taiwan’s team in the tournament.
Fairchild, who has been part of several MLB teams and is currently in the Cleveland Guardians’ organization, has a .223 batting average and 18 home runs and 68 RBIs in 591 at-bats in his five-year MLB career.
During the media event, Fairchild said Taiwanese catcher Lyle Lin, whom he played with for the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2021, was one of the reasons he decided to play for Taiwan.
“He definitely played a role in encouraging me to play, and he had nothing but good things to say about the team, how passionate the fans are, and how fun baseball is here. So, it was a big motivator,” Fairchild said.
The 29-year-old outfielder said he was “super excited” and “honored” to represent Taiwan in the upcoming WBC.
Asked about how he felt regarding Jonathon Long, an infielder in the Chicago Cubs organization, missing out on this year’s WBC, Fairchild said he saw the video of him getting hurt and was saddened by the incident.
“It was unfortunate timing, and you know, I haven’t met Jonathan, but he seems like a great guy, and I was really looking forward to playing with him in the WBC,” he said.
According to the Chinese Professional Baseball League (CPBL), which is coordinating the national team, it was notified by the Cubs franchise that Long is still hampered by a strained left elbow, which forced the 24-year-old to withdraw from the roster.
A seven-year-old horse had to be euthanized on Friday after breaking its back on the final fence of a Grand National steeplechase race that it won despite sustaining the serious injury. It follows the death of four horses at the Cheltenham Festival last month — including one after the prestigious Gold Cup. Gold Dancer was competing in the Mildmay Novices’ Chase during Ladies Day at Aintree’s Grand National Festival. The horse managed to cross the finish line approximately four lengths ahead of runner-up Regent’s Stroll. “The winner of our second race of the day, Gold Dancer, was pulled up after

The Daredevils yesterday took eight catches in the final as they eked out a victory in the Taiwan Cricket Triangular Tournament against PCCT at Yingfeng Cricket Ground in Taipei’s Songshan District. PCCT’s batting lineup collapsed after they asked the Daredevils to bowl in the T20 decider of the weekend tournament that also involved the Formosa Cricket Club. PCCT were bundled out for 76 in 16.2 overs against a disciplined Daredevils attack. Ninad Malwade was the top scorer in the innings with 21, but he was among those who offered chances to the fielders. Shane Ferreira and Jason Cameron took three wickets each, with
Hans Niemann declares he would become a “stone cold killer” in a Netflix documentary released on Tuesday about his feud with five-time classical world champion Magnus Carlsen, a pledge that injects new edge into the lingering fallout from the cheating scandal that shook elite chess. “I’m gonna be a stone cold killer the rest of my life,” the US’ Niemann says in the film. “I’m going to become the best player in the world, and no one is going to believe that now, but this clip will play over and over again in 10 years — just wait.” “I just
