FIFA president Gianni Infantino on Thursday said that he spoke with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and that he has “full confidence” in Mexico as a host country for this year’s FIFA World Cup, despite violent incidents following the death of a drug lord that left at least 70 people dead.
On Sunday last week, the Mexican army killed Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes “El Mencho,” the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, sparking several days of violence. Cartel members burned vehicles and blocked roads in nearly a dozen Mexican states.
“I had an excellent conversation earlier today with Mexico President Claudia Sheinbaum,” Infantino said. “I reiterated our full confidence in the host country, and look forward to it staging all scheduled matches there at what will be the most inclusive and the greatest FIFA World Cup ever.”

Mexico is set to host 13 World Cup matches, four of them in the western city of Guadalajara, in Jalisco State, the central hub for the Jalisco cartel.
“I spoke by phone with FIFA president Gianni Infantino; we continue working as usual to successfully host the 2026 FIFA World Cup,” Sheinbaum wrote on X. “We reaffirm our confidence in the country.”
Sheinbaum has vowed this week there was “no risk” for visitors, but on Thursday a World Cup diving event set to be held in a Guadalajara suburb next week was canceled over security concerns.
Earlier in the week the Portuguese soccer federation said it was “closely monitoring the delicate situation” ahead of a friendly match against Mexico’s national team in Mexico City.
Infantino earlier this week said in Colombia that he was convinced that “everything will go as smoothly as possible.”
Besides the four World Cup matches, the western city of Guadalajara is scheduled to host an international playoff late next month.
New Caledonia are to play Jamaica and the winners face the Democratic Republic of the Congo for a spot in the World Cup.
Jamaica Football Federation president Michael Ricketts this week said that his organization is closely monitoring the situation in Mexico ahead of the Reggae Boyz’ scheduled international matches next month.
A dominant Cade Cunningham on Thursday scored 42 points as the NBA-leading Detroit Pistons swatted aside the New York Knicks 126-111 on the NBA’s return from its brief All-Star Game break. Billed as a must-watch clash between two Eastern Conference rivals each in red-hot form, the game at Madison Square Garden became an exhibition for Cunningham, who also provided 13 assists and eight rebounds. The 24-year-old burnished his credentials as a Most Valuable Player contender, helping a young, surprise-package Pistons side to improve the best record in the entire NBA this season so far, to 41-13. After the game, Cunningham said that he
The Cleveland Cavaliers on Tuesday emphatically got back to winning ways in the NBA, coasting to a 109-94 victory over the New York Knicks as their recent star signing, James Harden, scored 20 points. The Cavs took the lead barely a minute into the game with an Evan Mobley three-pointer and never gave it up in a thoroughly comfortable night for the red-hot Ohio franchise. Former NBA Most Valuable Player (MVP) Harden, who was brought in from the Los Angeles Clippers this month, has never won a championship, despite being one of the most decorated players in the league. That was a key

Sitting second in the Western Conference, the Spurs were pushed hard for their ninth straight victory by the East-topping Pistons, who had entered the home court matchup on a five-game winning streak of their own. Defenses dominated the first meeting between the two sides this season, with Wembanyama making six blocks and 17 rebounds to fuel transitions as the Spurs pulled clear in the latter stages. While the Pistons’ shooting was at
Amanda Anisimova on Thursday ended a tearful Mirra Andreeva’s Dubai title defense with a comeback 2-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7/4) victory in the quarter-finals. The second-seeded American trailed fifth seed Andreeva by a set and a break before rallying to complete a 2 hour, 38 minute win. She booked a place in the semi-finals of a WTA 1000 event for the fourth time in her career. “I was almost in tears there at the end,” Anisimova said. “It made me emotional seeing her like that. I feel we both won today.” Anisimova was to face fellow American Jessica Pegula, who beat Denmark’s Clara Tauson 6-3,
