Russian Diana Shnaider continued her impressive winning streak in tour-level finals at the Monterrey Open on Saturday, beating compatriot Ekaterina Alexandrova 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 in the WTA 500 event’s final.
Shnaider had little trouble in the opening set but struggled in a topsy-turvy second, as Alexandrova clinched the set’s fifth and decisive break at 5-4 to force a decider.
Third-seed Shnaider carved out an advantage early on in the third set when she broke Alexandrova in the first game and held serve to go 2-0 up, an advantage she would not relinquish.

World No. 12 Shnaider is now unbeaten in her last five finals on the WTA Tour, adding the Monterrey crown to her triumphs in Hong Kong, Budapest, Bad Homburg and Hua Hin last year.
The win also saw Shnaider level her head-to-head record with Alexandrova, who was faced with a quick turnaround for the final after her semi-final against Czech Marie Bouzkova was moved from Friday to Saturday due to a rain-enforced suspension.
“It was harder to switch from one match to another because when you’re playing one match and you’re done, your mind is going like ‘today is off so you can relax,’” Alexandrova said.
“Today it was different, so after the semi-final you still need to be fully focused and be ready for the final, so maybe that was missing in the first set. I couldn’t find the rhythm, I wasn’t quite ready to play right from the first point,” she said.
Both players had little time to rest after the final before they made the 3,200km journey to New York to play in the first round of the US Open, which began yesterday.
“I hope that I will carry this momentum with me. For sure, it’s going to be a different tournament, different conditions,” said Shnaider, who reached the fourth round of the US Open last year. “I will just try to go there, rest tomorrow and then we’ll try to prepare for New York. We will see how it goes. I definitely spent a lot of energy this week, but I will just try to recharge and do my best in New York also.”
Shnaider is tomorrow to face Germany’s Laura Siegemund, while Alexandrova takes on Anastasija Sevastova of Latvia.
Elsewhere in tennis, Taiwanese Chan Hao-ching and her Chinese partner Jiang Xinyu yesterday fell short of claiming their first title as a doubles duo, losing the Tennis in the Land final in straight sets.
In a match between the top two seeds of the tournament in Cleveland, Ohio, the No. 2 duo was defeated by No. 1 seeds Anna Danilina of Kazakhstan and Aleksandra Krunic of Serbia 7-6 (3), 6-4 in 1 hour, 35 minutes.
The win marked Danilina’s 11th career WTA doubles title and Krunic’s eighth — and their first as a pair.
The runner-up finish was the best performance for Chan and Jiang, who started to pair up at this year’s Wimbledon Championships.

‘DEVASTATED’: Argentina’s win was a reversal of their 28-24 defeat last week, with Australian forward Fraser McReight adding that ‘we did the same thing last week’ Argentina flyhalf Santiago Carreras punished an undisciplined Australia with 23 points off the tee as the Pumas held on grimly for a 28-26 win in Sydney yesterday to breathe new life into their Rugby Championship campaign. A try-fest beckoned in afternoon sunshine at Sydney Football Stadium, but Argentina needed only one through captain Julian Montoya, with Carreras doing the damage with seven penalties and a conversion in front of a sell-out crowd. A week after letting a 14-point lead slip in a 28-24 defeat to Australia in Townsville, Argentina saw most of a 21-point advantage erased in the final quarter as the

Captain Vijay Kumar led the way yesterday as the Hsinchu Titans claimed the Taiwan Premier League title at the Yingfeng Cricket Ground in Taipei’s Songshan District (松山), beating PCCT by 27 runs. The weather was a topic again, but not the rain that played a role in previous matches in the often-delayed tournament. Kumar, who made 80 not out from 63 deliveries, and teammate Vishwajit Kumar (58 from 43) rescued the Titans from a precarious state at the end of the power play in the T20 match. The visitors were put in to bat and struggled to 26-3 as PCCT
China’s state-run People’s Daily newspaper on Monday published an essay about Chinese basketball it said was written by LeBron James, but a representative for the NBA star said on Thursday that the article was based on a series of interviews.
