Lai Xiang-chen has become the first Taiwanese woman to be signed to a professional volleyball team in Germany.
VfB Suhl LOTTO Thuringen yesterday announced Lai's signing on its Web site and Instagram, saying that it was pleased to add the 30-year-old as the team's libero to boost its defense.
"Lai brings international quality to the libero position," the team wrote. "With her training in Taiwan's competitive youth programs and several seasons in her home country's top league, Lai established herself as a key player in reception and defense."

VfB Suhl also praised Lai for playing for her national team at international tournaments such as the Asian Women's Volleyball Cup, the Asian Women's Volleyball Championship and the Asian Games.
VfB Suhl head coach Laszlo Hollosy said the team was pleased to welcome Lai, complimenting her technique, speed and skill in reception and defense.
"Xiang-chen impressed us not only with her game intelligence, but also with her professional attitude and presence on the court," Hollosy said. "We are convinced that she will play an important role in our defensive structure and be a key figure in the coming season."
Before Lai, the only other Taiwanese woman to play volleyball professionally in Europe was Yang Yi-chen who joined Italy's Lardini Filottrano as a setter in 2018.
Lai most recently played for China's Guangdong Shenzhen Glorious in the Chinese Volleyball Super League for two seasons between 2023 and this year.
Lai said she chose VfB Suhl because it would be a great environment for her to develop further as a player and as a person.
"I'm excited about the new challenges and look forward to being part of the team and giving my best in the coming season," she said on VfB Suhl's Web site.
From early on in her career she had wanted to play in Europe, Lai said in another statement. She got the opportunity to fulfill the dream after VfB Suhl came across her tournament tapes by chance, Lai said.
The opportunity to play in Germany is not only a career milestone, but also an opportunity to find new excitement and grow, she added.
Lai said that she would spend time in Taiwan preparing physically for the start of the new European season in October.
If called on by Taiwan, she would be proud to represent the nation at next year's Asian Games in Japan, Lai said, adding that donning the national uniform is always an honor.
Twelve days after winning her second Grand Slam title at the French Open, Coco Gauff fell at the first hurdle on grass in Berlin on Thursday as beaten Paris finalist Aryna Sabalenka advanced to the quarter-finals. Recipient of a first round bye, American Gauff lost 6-3, 6-3 to Chinese qualifier Wang Xinyu as world number one Sabalenka beat Rebeka Masarova 6-2, 7-6 (8/6) in her second round tie. Winner of 10 main tour titles, including the US Open in 2023 and the WTA Finals last year, Gauff has yet to lift a trophy in a grass-court tournament. “After I won the first
Aaron Civale got a little wild in the right-hander’s first start for the Chicago White Sox two days after he was traded by the Milwaukee Brewers. Civale on Sunday walked four of the first seven hitters he faced in a 2-1 loss to the Texas Rangers. The 30-year-old finished with four walks, one off his career high, while allowing six hits and two runs in five innings. He threw 65 strikes and 39 balls. Chicago trailed 2-1 when he was replaced by Dan Altavilla to start the sixth. “Not the cleanest,” Civale said. “It’s been a whirlwind of a week. First couple
Sergio Ramos on Tuesday outfoxed two Inter players and artfully headed home the first goal for Monterrey at the FIFA Club World Cup. The 39-year-old Ramos slipped through the penalty area for the score just as he did for so many years in the shirts of Real Madrid and Spain’s national team, with whom he combined smarts, timing and physicality. Ramos’ clever goal and his overall defensive play at the Rose Bowl were major factors in Monterrey’s impressive 1-1 draw against the UEFA Champions League finalists in the clubs’ first match of the tournament. “There is always a joy to contribute to the
Top-ranked Aryna Sabalenka staged a “crazy comeback,” saving four match points before beating Elena Rybakina 7-6 (6), 3-6, 7-6 (6) in the quarter-finals of the Berlin Open on Friday. Sabalenka was 6-2 down in the final-set tie-breaker, but won six straight points to reach her eighth semi-final of the season. “Elena is a great player and we’ve had a lot of tough battles,” Sabalenka said. “I have no idea how I was able to win those last points. I think I just got lucky.” “I remember a long time ago when I was just starting, I won a lot of matches being down
