Bolstered by a £100 million (US$135.7 million) spending spree ahead of the FIFA Club World Cup, Manchester City are determined to erase the memory of a disappointing season by returning to winning ways.
For the first time in eight years, City ended the domestic campaign without a major trophy as Pep Guardiola’s men surrendered their English Premier League crown to Liverpool after an unprecedented four consecutive titles.
A UEFA Champions League exit before the last 16 for the first time since 2012/2013 and a shock FA Cup final defeat against Crystal Palace compounded a miserable season for a club that has grown used to success since an Abu Dhabi-backed takeover 17 years ago.

At one time, the month-long expanded Club World Cup, sandwiched between two grueling seasons, was the last thing Guardiola or his players appeared to want.
Ballon d’Or winner Rodri hinted in September last year that a players’ strike was “close” over fixture congestion.
However, City are keen to turn the page from last season and begin afresh with major changes in the squad and coaching staff.

Tijjani Reijnders, Rayan Cherki, Rayan Ait-Nouri and Marcus Bettinelli were all signed last week to beat the deadline to feature in the Club World Cup from the start.
City also spent more than £72 million in January on Omar Marmoush, Abdukodir Khusanov, Vitor Reis and Nico Gonzalez.
Adding Claudio Echeverri, who arrived in Manchester in January at the end of a loan spell at River Plate, nine of Guardiola’s 27-man squad for the tournament have been at City for less than six months.
Former captain Kyle Walker and record signing Jack Grealish have been left out of the travelling party.
Guardiola has also made radical changes to his staff with Pep Lijnders, Juergen Klopp’s former assistant at Liverpool, and former City defender Kolo Toure joining the backroom team, and three other coaches departing.
“This is a very, very serious competition,” Guardiola said.
City begin the tournament as third favorites in the British bookmakers odds behind newly-crowned European champions Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid.
They should ease through a group containing Morocco’s Wydad Casablanca, Al-Ain of Abu Dhabi and Italian giants Juventus.
Yet there is an air of mystery around what to expect from City, given the fresh faces and their inconsistency over the past season.
After a miserable mid-winter run of one win in 13 games in all competitions, Guardiola’s side recovered to an extent as they finished third in the Premier League.
The additions of Reijnders and Cherki add some much-needed verve to an ageing midfield and compensate for the departure of Kevin De Bruyne to Napoli.
Ait-Nouri’s arrival ends a long spell without a natural left-back and would add an extra attacking dimension down that side.
However, most crucially of all, Rodri is back from the cruciate knee ligament injury that decimated his and City’s season.
When the midfielder went down against Arsenal in late September last year, City were still undefeated and top of the Premier League.
His importance as the key cog in the City machine was brutally exposed in the months that followed.
The 28-year-old made his return in the final week of the Premier League season.
With Rodri restored and Guardiola’s squad refreshed, City could be a force to be reckoned with again over the next month.
‘DEVASTATED’: Argentina’s win was a reversal of their 28-24 defeat last week, with Australian forward Fraser McReight adding that ‘we did the same thing last week’ Argentina flyhalf Santiago Carreras punished an undisciplined Australia with 23 points off the tee as the Pumas held on grimly for a 28-26 win in Sydney yesterday to breathe new life into their Rugby Championship campaign. A try-fest beckoned in afternoon sunshine at Sydney Football Stadium, but Argentina needed only one through captain Julian Montoya, with Carreras doing the damage with seven penalties and a conversion in front of a sell-out crowd. A week after letting a 14-point lead slip in a 28-24 defeat to Australia in Townsville, Argentina saw most of a 21-point advantage erased in the final quarter as the
ELEVEN STRIKEOUTS: Blake Snell allowed two singles and two walks against the Rockies as he ended a personal three-game skid with his first win since Aug. 16 Blake Snell on Wednesday struck out a season-high 11 in six innings, while Mookie Betts hit a grand slam in the eighth as the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the Colorado Rockies 9-0 for their fourth straight win. Helped by their third series sweep of the Rockies this MLB season, the Dodgers increased their National League West lead to three games over the San Diego Padres, who lost 2-1 at home to the Cincinnati Reds. Betts went four for five with five RBIs, capped by his seventh career slam on a 3-0 pitch from reliever Anthony Molina to make it 8-0. Andy Pages and
Captain Vijay Kumar led the way yesterday as the Hsinchu Titans claimed the Taiwan Premier League title at the Yingfeng Cricket Ground in Taipei’s Songshan District (松山), beating PCCT by 27 runs. The weather was a topic again, but not the rain that played a role in previous matches in the often-delayed tournament. Kumar, who made 80 not out from 63 deliveries, and teammate Vishwajit Kumar (58 from 43) rescued the Titans from a precarious state at the end of the power play in the T20 match. The visitors were put in to bat and struggled to 26-3 as PCCT
China’s state-run People’s Daily newspaper on Monday published an essay about Chinese basketball it said was written by LeBron James, but a representative for the NBA star said on Thursday that the article was based on a series of interviews. The paper, better known as the mouthpiece of the Chinese Communist Party, had said James authored the essay, “Basketball is a Bridge that Connects Us,” a tribute to Chinese players and fans of the sport written in the first person. “LeBron James Pens an Article in the People’s Daily,” read a post published on the newspaper’s official WeChat account. On Thursday, a representative
