The Detroit Lions on Monday sent the Seattle Seahawks spinning to their first defeat of the NFL season with an emphatic 42-29 victory in the Motor City.
Lions quarterback Jared Goff produced a scintillating performance, throwing two touchdowns and finishing with 292 passing yards from a perfect 18 of 18 completions.
Goff was also involved in one of the highlights of the game, a clever trick play that saw him collect a lofted pass from Detroit receiver Amon-Ra St Brown for a third-quarter touchdown.

Goff admitted afterward he was unaware that he had thrown a pristine 18 of 18 passes.
“It’s good when the ball doesn’t hit the ground,” Goff told ESPN. “I wasn’t sure [during the game]. I was trying to remember if I had any incomplete passes. I couldn’t quite tell, but I knew I had a chance.”
The Lions made a blistering start, surging to a 21-7 halftime lead thanks to touchdowns from running back David Montgomery and a brace of scores from Jahymr Gibbs, but Seattle rallied in the third quarter to get within one score of the Lions.
Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith found A.J. Barner for a nine-yard completion to make it 21-14 before Goff and St Brown combined for Detroit’s fourth touchdown of the night.
Another Seattle touchdown — Kenneth Walker rushing over from one yard out — gave the Seahawks hope with the score at 28-20.
Yet Detroit’s offense remained able to punch holes in Seattle’s defense at will, and Goff found Jameson Williams for a 70-yard touchdown that made it 35-20 heading into the final quarter.
Walker rushed for his second score of the night to keep Seattle’s hopes alive at 35-27, but another controlled Detroit touchdown drive effectively iced the game, with Goff marching the team 80 yards upfield before picking out St Brown in the end zone.
The Lions improved to 3-1 with the win and remain second in the National Football Conference North behind undefeated Minnesota (4-0). Seattle fell to 3-1, but continue to lead the National Football Conference West.
In Monday’s other game, the Tennessee Titans overpowered the Miami Dolphins 31-12 to claim their first win of the season.
Nick Folk drilled five field goals, while two close-range touchdowns from Tyjae Spears and Tony Pollard sealed an emphatic win against an anemic Dolphins lineup.
The Dolphins, who are without injured quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, fell to 1-3 with the defeat.
Tagovailoa’s backup quarterback, Tyler Huntley, had a miserable night, throwing for just 96 yards and making just 14 completions.
The Minnesota Timberwolves, with so many promising performances spoiled by late mistakes fresh in their memory bank, sure timed this strong finish well. Jaden McDaniels scored a career playoff-high 30 points and spearheaded Minnesota’s stifling defense on an ailing Luka Doncic, and the Timberwolves beat the Los Angeles Lakers 116-104 to take a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven Western Conference first-round series in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on Friday night. “Jaden never looks tired. He looks like he could play 48 minutes,” said teammate Anthony Edwards, who had 29 points, eight rebounds and eight assists. Julius Randle added 22 points for the Wolves, who outscored
Inter’s defense of their Italian Serie A title was hit with a setback on Sunday as they lost 1-0 at home to AS Roma, while Scott McTominay netted a brace as SSC Napoli beat Torino 2-0 to go top of the table. No fixtures were played on Friday or Saturday because of the funeral of Pope Francis in Rome, meaning the full round of Serie A matches took place on Sunday and yesterday. Matias Soule’s first-half strike for Roma knocked Inter off top spot earlier in the day before new Napoli opened up a three-point buffer with victory in Sunday’s

After pounding Miami 124-87 in game three on Saturday, No.1 Eastern Conference seeds Cleveland once again piled on the misery for their outclassed opponents with a crushing 138-83 victory to complete a 4-0 series win. The 55-point drubbing was the largest series-clinching victory in NBA playoff history and sets up a series against either the Indiana Pacers or Milwaukee Bucks in
Ethiopia’s Tigst Assefa yesterday set a women’s only world record of 2 hours, 15 minutes, 50 seconds as she won the London Marathon, while Kenya’s Sabastian Sawe put a star-studded men’s field to the sword. For 28-year-old Assefa it was ample compensation for finishing runner-up in London and the Paris Olympics last year — especially as bitter Dutch rival, the Ethiopia-born Sifan Hassan, finished third. Assefa dropped Kenya’s Joyciline Jepkosgei as the race, played out in blazing sunshine and with thousands lining the route, entered its business end. She came home almost three minutes clear of the Kenyan. Hassan, who beat her in
